A moment to recharge

Tuesday is a special day in Mount Eliza for Sue. It’s the day she can visit her children, enjoy a coffee in the village or simply take a moment for herself — small things that make a big difference when you’re caring for someone you love.

Sue cares for her husband Don, 90, who lives with mobility issues and Alzheimer’s. On Tuesdays, a Uniting AgeWell Home Care worker visits Don at home, providing companionship and giving Sue a regular break to recharge.

For the former Mount Eliza Bowls Club secretary, that time might mean a day on the green — or simply a pause in a week otherwise shaped by someone else’s needs.

Uniting AgeWell also supports the couple with help around the home and garden, and Don will soon join the Social Connections group at the Andrew Kerr Care AgeWell Centre in Mornington.

“As his condition changes, caring becomes more demanding,” says Sue.  “Respite care gives me the chance to keep going.”

Married for 36 years, Sue and Don love their life in Mount Eliza — the trees, beaches, village shops and the comfort of home. With support in place, they can continue living where they feel happiest.

“I know I need to care for myself in order to care for Don,” Sue says. “If I burn out, what will he do?”

Uniting AgeWell has also assisted Don to access equipment and in-home physiotherapy, making everyday life safer and more comfortable.

“A friend recommended Uniting AgeWell to us,” says Sue. “They enable us to keep living at home, which is where we both want to be. It’s our happy place.”

Uniting AgeWell provides a continuum of care on the Mornington Peninsula, including social support, home care and residential care. Home Care Information sessions will be held on 22 and 23 July, with sessions at 10.30am and 2pm on each date at the Andrew Kerr Care AgeWell Centre.
