A lifetime of meaning
Volunteers
Some things are difficult to put into words. The lilt in an older person’s voice as they chat about gardening or a favourite television show with a receptive listener. Laughter bubbling over as stories from a lifetime are shared. A simple trip to the shopping centre for a latte and a little retail therapy.
These are the moments our volunteers make possible. It’s camaraderie and companionship in action – the kind that brings joy to sometimes lonely moments and creates meaning and purpose for both volunteers and our customers.
During National Volunteer Week, from 18–24 May, it’s time for Uniting AgeWell to celebrate all our wonderful volunteers and say a heartfelt thank you.
The theme this year, ‘Your Year to Volunteer’, is a call-out encouraging more people to give their time and talents to strengthen community connections.
Uniting AgeWell Operations Manager – Social Connections, Jen Duniam, says volunteering offers many benefits, including a strong sense of achievement and purpose.
“It enables you to share your talents, learn new skills and can help create a better work-life balance,” Jen says. “Each volunteer is unique and brings different interests and experiences. In turn, the wide range of volunteering opportunities available means there really is something for everyone.”
Chinthiya Jansz, who has recently joined Uniting AgeWell’s volunteer workforce as a social connections volunteer, says volunteering “…gets me out of the house. Instead of just chilling and lazing around, I’m out and about in the community. It’s also an opportunity to enjoy new experiences.”
As a result of her positive experience, she is now seeking a career in aged care.
Chinthiya’s story is one of many we are proud to share during National Volunteer Week across our website and social media channels.
Whatever your interests or capacity, Uniting AgeWell Operations Manager – Volunteer Services, Hannah Griffin believes there is a role for you.
Her team provide community-based options as diverse as spending time with people in their own homes, supporting outings, joining planned activities at our AgeWell Centres like exercise and dance, helping older people build confidence using technology, or regular phone chats.
Those living in country Victoria, can also volunteer as a driver with Grampians Community Transport or for the much‑valued Meals on Wheels program in Swan Hill, delivering hot meals with a generous dose of kindness and cheer.
Laurinda Laxlay has volunteered at Uniting AgeWell’s Andrew Kerr Care AgeWell Centre since 2024. She encourages all potential volunteers to take the leap. “Being here has added a whole new dimension to my life, I love it!”
When people connect with purpose, something special happens. It’s difficult to put into words – but we all understand the meaning.
