In tune with happiness

Residential Care

Glennys Gracie knows the “keys” to happiness.  They’re right at her fingertips.

The 76-year-old resident at Uniting AgeWell Newnham Community, Aldersgate Village loves enriching the lives of others through her piano playing.

Every Thursday morning she plays in the café, and people enjoy coffee and cake as they listen to her near-professional performances.  Glennys has also started playing in the community room on Sunday mornings and residents flock to hear her repertoire of classical and easy-listening numbers.  She’s even composed some of her own music.

“I’m also happy to play at special events as well as church services,” explains Glennys.  “I get huge joy from playing and I love that I bring joy to other people too.  That’s a wonderful thing, you know!”

Glennys, who trained at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in the late 1960’s, has taught music for most of her life, as well as played for Eisteddfods, choirs, at performances and as an organist at many churches.

She grins as she flexes her fingers. “Playing the piano also keeps my brain active and my fingers nimble.”

Glennys joined the Aldersgate community in May after she broke her leg and realised she needed more specialised care after being discharged from hospital.  Her husband, Rodney, is also at the community, so it made sense to move in.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying myself,” the grandmother says.  “They have a lot of fun here, they really do!  There’s a pizza movie night, exercise sessions, bingo and of course we go on bus trip outings all over the place.  The residents are all so friendly, I’ve made a lot of really good friends here!”

Since moving in Glennys has gained some weight which she attributes to the amazing food. “The meals are great and the staff always go out of their way to look after us all.  All in all, it’s pretty marvellous being here.”
