A little bit of know-how goes a long way

Volunteers
Retired Telstra technician David Freeman is one of those awesome people who can fix little things when they break, or repair them before they break!
He’s volunteered with the maintenance department at Uniting AgeWell Strathdon Community for the last 32 years and repairs the little things that need his magic touch.
“I enjoy it” says the 82-year-old who lives on his own. “I’ve made a lot of friends, mainly with the staff, over the years.”
David’s history with Strathdon Community goes back a long way. His brother, who survived two strokes, was a resident there for many years and David used to regularly visit him. As time went by, he grew fond of Strathdon and he was keen to see how he could help. With his hands being the best tools he has, the answer was simple!
David and his mum also supported the fetes that Strathdon Community held. “We helped out at the garden stall,” David says. “Mum made pickles, I made red tomato chutney. One year Mum baked and iced this amazing Christmas cake that was raffled – only she won the raffle, so she asked them to redraw it!”
When it comes to volunteering, one size does not fit all.
