Tornadoes visit Kings Meadows

Launceston Tornadoes and Uniting AgeWell connect generations through sport

Female athletes from the Launceston Tornadoes joined residents at Uniting AgeWell Kings Meadows Community, Aldersgate to bond over basketball and the benefits of being strong at any age.

The visit is part of a growing partnership between the Tornadoes and Uniting AgeWell, aimed at fostering intergenerational connection and celebrating the role of sport in community life.

The event was interactive, with players sharing their personal basketball journeys, engaging residents with ball skills demonstrations and encouraging friendly participation in passing drills and Q&A sessions.

Residents enjoyed meeting the players and hearing about their recent successes. They also shared their experience of playing sport and the importance of physical fitness at any age.

Lew Davidson (94) had a successful career cycling, as well as playing cricket and football. Lew’s first job was delivering early morning newspapers by bicycle. Lew has made a conscious effort to maintain his health and fitness and enjoys the benefits of sport and says, “Being active when you’re young helps you be more mobile when you’re older.”

Vice Chair of the Launceston Tornadoes, Madi Shepherd, said the team values its ongoing relationship with Uniting AgeWell.

"This partnership is special to us. It’s a chance for our players to connect with a different generation, hear incredible life stories and give back to the community in a meaningful way. We’re so proud to be involved and look forward to many more visits like this."

Among the players who visited were current New Zealand Tall Ferns representative, 18-year-old Bailey Flavell who helped lead the activities and share stories of her emerging pathway through elite basketball. Alongside her was Megan “Mo” Mullings, an elite basketballer who has travelled the world perfecting her craft.

Uniting AgeWell Residential Services Manager, Mandi Blignault says, “We are part of the community at Kings Meadows and sport is a big part of the local scene so it’s really great we can bring some of the action to residents.”

The Tornadoes will also be visiting Uniting AgeWell’s Newnham Community, Aldersgate Village in June.
