How Residential Respite Care can support you to live well

Uniting AgeWell Residential Respite Care provides full access to the quality care and amenities offered at Uniting AgeWell residences including:

  • 24/7 registered nurses and skilled care staff
  • Vibrant lifestyle and activities programs
  • Chef-prepared meals
  • Allied health services.

Available at all Victorian residences and Rosetta Community, Strathaven and Mornington Community, Lillian Martin in Tasmania.

How much does it cost?

The cost of residential respite care at Uniting AgeWell is based on 85% of the single person rate of the basic age pension and all respite customers are asked to pay this fee. The Basic Daily Care Fee is calculated daily, and you pay the Fee for every day that you are in an aged care home – from the day your care starts, to the day your care ends.

Caring for those who care

A short-term respite stay enables carers to take a break from their caring role, recharge and refresh, and for the older person to also have a break in routine, enjoy a new environment and the company of others.

Respite stays are also extremely beneficial for people recovering from a hospital procedure, who need extra care and support before returning home.

We’ve found that having experienced the quality of care, amenities and the welcoming and friendly environment of an AgeWell residence, many respite clients choose to continue on as permanent residents.

A different kind of care

The timing could not have been worse. In June, in the midst of isolation during a terrifying pandemic, Helen Courtney had a fall and broke her arm.

And one of the first things the 82-year-old thought was “it’s my left arm, and I’m left-handed. How can I possibly look after myself as well as my husband now?”

Helen cares for her 88-year-old husband, John (Patrick), who suffered a severe stroke a year ago. They live in an apartment at Manningtree Hawthorn – an Independent Retirement Living complex which abuts the Hawthorn Community aged care residence, both of which are owned and operated by Uniting AgeWell.

They decided that John would go to Hawthorn Community for three weeks respite care, so Helen could concentrate on getting better, much to the relief of their five very concerned children – one who lives in Victoria, one in Canada and three in New South Wales.
